Local Cuisine & Wineries
Home to some of Western Australia’s finest gourmet foods and most sumptuous wine, the Albany region is rapidly gaining a reputation for providing some of the state’s freshest and most highly regarded local produce.
Popular with locals and tourists alike, there is no better place to sample the best that the region has to offer than the weekly Albany Farmers Market. With produce to suit every taste, these markets feature fantastic produce that is literally handpicked from the Albany area and delivered direct to you.
Albany and the surrounding region are home to some of Western Australia’s most renowned and awarded wineries, boasting quality wines and sophisticated flavours in both red and white varieties.
Whale Watching
Those who have witnessed it will testify that the whale watching season in Albany is a truly memorable experience. Guests at Maitraya often comment to us their excitement at watching the whales go by from the residence’s living areas! Every year from June to October the Southern Ocean comes alive with Humpback and Southern Right Whales as they embark on their annual migration.
Albany has become world-famous as a whale watching destination and in 2007, visitors to Albany and the locals were awed by the great numbers of Southern Right and Humpback Whales in and around Albany’s sheltered coves. At Middleton Beach, locals slept to the sound of a mother and calf close to the shore.
With numerous viewing points and tours on offer, this is the perfect chance to encounter one of nature’s most graceful and misunderstood creatures.
Scuba Diving
Albany offers scuba divers a range of captivating and exotic dive spots that are home to some of the world’s most spectacular marine life. Divers of all skill levels can experience the opportunity to accompany the migratory Whale Sharks as they make their way across the Albany Reef, swim through the depths of the purpose-sunk HMAS Perth or try and catch a glimpse of the 500+ species of marine life that are on display.

Albany’s beaches provide plenty of surfing and bodyboarding options. Both beginners and more experienced surfers can find suitable breaks all along the coast. Close to town, Middleton beach is ideal for kids and beginners.
